"These five rings - blue, yellow, black, green
and red - represent the five parts of the world
now encompassed by Olympism and ready to compete
against each other. Moreover, the six colours
(including the white background) thus combined
represent those of all nations, without
exception. The blue and yellow of Sweden, the
blue and white of Greece, the French, English,
American, German, Belgian, Italian and Hungarian
tricolours, the yellow and red of Spain are side
by side with the new Brazilian and Australian
flags, the old Japan and the new China. It is a
true international emblem." |

A
Tribute to
Merlene Ottey,
Jamaica's Marathon Sprinter
For
the first time since dinosaurs walked the Earth, Merlene
Ottey did not qualify for the Olympics. Had she done
so
this would have been her EIGHTH Olympics! The
48 year old "Queen of the Track" ran just under the
qualifying speed but she still ran faster than most
of the field who were not even born
when she ran her first race! Ottey
won bronze at the 1979 Pan American Games twenty
nine years ago and has gone on to win another thirty
three
world medals in the twenty nine years since! She is
the oldest track medalist ever and if you own
a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records you
will find an entire page devoted to her.
Though Ottey never won Olympic Gold she has won nine
Olympic Medals and seven Gold Medals in other world
games. |
